Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bando, Atrani

Located on the slopes of Monte Maggiore, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bando in Atrani is a historical and spiritual gem of the Amalfi Coast. Its first mention dates back to September 9, 1187, as documented in the Amalfi Diplomatic Code, but its history and tradition trace back to the early Middle Ages.

A rocky church and Its historical significance

The church is named "del Bando" due to the practice during the Maritime Republic (839-1131) of proclaiming edicts and death sentences from this place. The building, accessible via a staircase of about 750 steps, features Romanesque-Amalfi style and is oriented east-west, symbolizing Christ and eternity.

Inside the single-nave church are precious paintings and a 15th-century fresco of the Virgin Mary, depicting the miraculous intervention of the Madonna to save a condemned man. The 18th-century restoration gave the building its current Baroque appearance.

Treasures and rituals of the sanctuary

The sacristy houses a Roman marble funerary urn, while the bell tower contains two bronze bells, one dedicated to the Madonna del Bando. The polychrome majolica floor, dating from the 19th century, comes from the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

On September 7, 1944, Archbishop Ercolano Marini of Amalfi crowned the image of the Virgin, elevating the church to Marian Sanctuary status. Faithful visitors on this date can receive a special indulgence.

Archaeological discoveries and traditions

Next to the Sanctuary is the "Grotta di Masaniello," believed to be the last refuge of the famous Neapolitan leader. Recent discoveries of caves with stalactites, stalagmites, and archaeological artifacts testify to human presence since the early medieval period. The Superintendency is conducting thorough studies on these findings.
